Establishing Optimal Esthetics in Finishing when Substituting Canines in the Patient with Congenitally Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors

Description

Providing the appropriate orthodontic treatment for the patient with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors is often a challenging task. Today, this goal typically focuses on space appropriation for ideal implant placement, while creating the proper foundation for our restorative colleagues to establish optimal function and esthetics utilizing the most conservative approach. However, sometimes the appropriate treatment option may be to close space and substitute the canines for the missing lateral incisors. Therefore, it’s imperative to ask specific questions when planning treatment for these patients: When is it acceptable to close space? Which type of restoration is best for the patient – implant or fixed partial denture? Is it necessary to monitor these patients in the mixed dentition? Dr. Kokich will discuss when space closure may be the ideal treatment option, while providing a checklist for finishing with optimal esthetics in patients with canine substitution.
